One of the top scorers in South Hampton Roads is close to finalizing her college plans with Wilson senior guard Taylor Edwards on the verge of committing to the Old Dominion Lady Monarchs according to Lady Presidents head coach Roger Smith.
“We will know for sure in about 11 days when our seniors finish classes. She has the SAT {score} but her final grades will determine if she has the grade point average,” Smith said via Facebook on Monday.
Edwards, the Conference 17 Player of the Year, averaged 16 points, nine rebounds and eight assists per contest leading Wilson to the Group 4A state semifinals where they lost to eventual runner-up William Fleming. The 5-foot--team All-State and All-757 honors. A commitment from Edwards would give the Monarch program two Portsmouth natives with IC Norcom senior Travis Fields electing to join the ODU mens’ 2016 recruiting class earlier this year.
“She’s on track. ODU is just waiting so we can make it official,” Smith noted.
Smith has one other senior that has signed a national letter of intent this year, with point guard Mariah Coker signing with Chowan. Junior wing Jaylyn Copeland, who led Wilson with 17 points and nine rebounds in the loss to William Fleming, is also receiving interest from Norfolk State and Hampton. Smith expects attention to pick up for Copeland with a big senior season.
“If she can turn her motor on she will be unstoppable next year, but only time will tell,” the longtime coach added
