Rising senior Ellis Brooks of Benedictine gave his verbal commitment to Duke in late March. He retracted that this morning and announced his decision via Twitter.
“(I am) hereby reopening my recruitment after careful consideration with my family,” said the message. Attached to that was a notepad graphic that went into more detail.
“I am announcing that today, after consulting with my parents, I will reopen my recruitment to all colleges interested in me as a student-athlete. I thank Duke University, Coach Cutcliffe, Coach Boyette and Coach Knowles for believing in me, but at this time I would like to explore more colleges before I finalize my decision.” (spelling corrected and punctuation added)
In 2015, Brooks had 117 tackles, 12 tackles for loss, seven sacks, four forced fumbles and three fumble recoveries and garnered his second straight VISAA all-state team honors. Duke was the first college program to offer a scholarship to Ellis and his former teammate Scott Bracey (Class of 2016) is headed to play for Duke this fall.
The 6-2 230 pound linebacker currently holds 17 scholarship offers, including Duke, Maryland, East Carolina, Michigan, Michigan State, UNC, NC State, Clemson, Notre Dame, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Louisville, Pitt, Penn State, Indiana, Stanford, Wisconsin, Rutgers, Northwestern, Wake Forest and Vanderbilt.
In other words, Ellis Brooks will have no lack of suitors at this point and he has all summer to make unofficial visits.
