In 2014 Coach Sam Scarborough was in a bit of a conundrum. There was a quarterback competition in the works between Bobby Price (SR/QB 6-3 185) and Scotty Watson (JR/QB 6-2 170). Watson was a transfer out of Salem High School and Price was bought up in the farm system (so to speak) within First Colonial High School.
Last season with Bobby Price transferring to Bishop Sullivan, the decision became that much easier to go with Scotty Watson. With Watson coming into his senior season there’s a new quarterback possibly on the rise heading to First Colonial. Colt Minson is an eighth-grader looking to graduate in a few weeks from Lynnhaven Middle School.
Minson (5-11 160) has been playing football for a very long time but is at a bit of a crossroads. The Blues product is in direct line to play for Coach Scarborough next year and Scarborough would love to get his hands of the hopeful prospect. Resting within Minson’s line of sight is Coach Chris Scott and Bishop Sullivan High School.
Coach Scott has been the beneficiary of top notch talent looking to go where proven results speak for themselves. At Ocean Lakes, Coach Scott and virtually the same coaching staff won games and sent players on to play high level college ball. Quite a few players have transferred to Bishop Sullivan since Coach Scott resigned from Ocean Lakes including Dolphins prospect Tyler Desue (JR QB 6-2 180). Last season Bobby Price handled the starting quarterback position for the Crusaders. With Price graduating, how open is the quarterback competition at Bishop Sullivan?
Colt’s decision is a microcosm of what’s happening with elite players in the high school ranks. Bishop Sullivan provides an unproven but possibly golden opportunity to showcase. The academics are demanding. As a quarterback, he would come in as a back up to the more experienced Desue. At First Colonial, he might be able to walk in the door and develop into a four year starter.
Minson made his way out to the recruit757 College Prospect Assessment Camp (CPAC) where he was able to put his skills on display. The rising freshman didn’t disappoint as he presented extremely strong footwork, a tight spiral, and genuine mechanics on the day. When it was all said and done Minson only wanted to throw a few footballs.
“All I want to do is get out here and throw. I want to get my arm loose and get out here so I can show everyone what I can do and get better from last year. At Lynnhaven last year, I think I played pretty well,” said Minson.
Minson’s stellar play has followed him well beyond the field at Lynnhaven Middle School. Last month, Minson was invited to play in the 2016 U.S. National Team Development Games after a strong showing at USA Football’s regional camp in Virginia Beach. This will give Minson a chance to train with top high school coaches, NFL alumni, and current NCAA coaches. Aside from the recruit757 CPAC, Minson is gearing up to head to North Carolina then Louisiana to participate in the Manning Passing Academy. Both camps will be more than beneficial to his progression whether he chooses Bishop Sullivan or First Colonial High School.
“These camps will do more than put me on the radar as a quarterback. They will get me noticed and that’s all I really want to do right now”, concluded Minson.
Look for more to come from Colt Minson and “The Decision” as we progress further into our off season.
