Playing on a powerhouse team like Ocean Lakes is a blessing for a young athlete. The older athletes have proven themselves and provide an example for younger athletes to follow.
In the case of a player like Jaevon Becton (SO DE 6-4 230), it can be difficult to find your way out of the shadow of players that are well known and highly recruited. Becton is no small athlete. At 6-4 and 230, he likely would have started for most teams as a freshman. At Ocean Lakes, he’s coming into his junior season and will finally see a full time role as a defensive end.
Becton has made college visits this spring and even picked up an early offer from NC State. This week, college coaches visited local schools and spurred more activity. On Thursday, Becton landed his second scholarship offer. This one came from East Carolina.“East Carolina likes what every coach likes about him: his size, his length and his athleticism. They see him having a huge upside as a football player,” said Ocean Lakes head coach Joe Jones. “I absolutely believe more offers will be coming over the next few weeks.”
For college coaches wanting to see Becton in action in a helmet and pads, they’ll have to wait until the fall to get a true taste of what he can do. Jaevon started to see playing time in week eight of his sophomore season, but he was playing defensive end behind two experienced seniors. Most of the reps went to Dedrion Bacote-Sweat and Tre Hubbard. Bacote is moving on to play his college ball at the University of Central Florida while Hubbard decided to walk on at Virginia Tech.
Ocean Lakes held a college showcase day on Tuesday, and that brought out over 30 college coaches, including representation from Virginia Tech, Tennessee, Boston College, Navy, Marshall, NC State, North Carolina, Hampton, Norfolk State, Old Dominion, VMI, James Madison, Towson, Elon, and many others. Becton is now on the radar and receiving offers. He’s started to prove himself and will have many more opportunities to do so.
