You better believe that freshmen are out there landing scholarship offers too. Talent in the 757 runs deep.
Indian River linebacker Ahshawn Moore landed his first scholarship offer Friday morning when Marshall assistant coach J.C. Price stopped by the school to review prospects with head coach Glenwood Ferebee. College coaches can’t meet with prospects off of the college campus before September of a student’s junior year. Coach Price didn’t have to wait to make a decision.
“Ahshawn is a lot like Jaquan Yulee. He’s tough and physical, and he’s taller. I told the coach about Ahshawn, showed him the film and he got an offer,” said Ferebee.
Moore played inside linebacker behind and beside top ranked seniors Tavante Beckett and Jaquan Yulee. Coach Ferebee sees Moore as another Yulee in a taller body.
“We have a lot of good freshmen here. Gerrian Christopher, Ben Smiley, Rasheen Brooks, Carmelo Sweat, Desean Cromwell, Laquan Bryant… we’re going to be talking a lot about these guys in the future,” the coach exclaimed.
When a young player like Moore (FR ILB 6-3 210) can spend time playing alongside and practicing against players like Beckett and Yulee, they’re going to grow up quickly. Beckett committed to play his college ball at Virginia Tech, while Yulee committed to Alabama then changed his commitment to Marshall in January of this year.
With young players on the rise at Indian River, there seems to be no doubt that the Braves will be competitive for quite some time. Meanwhile, the addition of Coach Bill Dee down the road at Oscar Smith leaves no doubt that the Tigers are going to stick around for a while and be very competitive in the Southeastern District. The rivalry between Indian River and Oscar Smith is set to get quite heated even with the departure of Richard Morgan.
