As we continue into our off season players across both the Southside and Peninsula find themselves picking up offers. Derrick Eason Jr. (SO DT 6-3 240) used his massive frame last season to help lead the Pilots as far as week two of the playoffs. Eason is now being rewarded for the hard work he’s put in over the last two seasons within Coach Dealton Cotton’s program. The rising junior announced on Tuesday he had received his first offer. This offer has come by way of UNC-Charlotte and looks to be the first on many to come for Eason, Jr.“Nothing really led up to me receiving this offer. I got this because of the hard work I put in with my team throughout the season. Initially I was at practice and UNC-Charlotte came out to Norview to evaluate another player and I caught their attention. Getting this offer really means a lot to me. This lets me know that all the hard work I’ve put into my game really means something. This also lets me know that in the end hard work will always pay off”, stated Eason, Jr.
Should Eason Jr. commit to UNC-Charlotte their program could be getting a hardworking and consistent defensive tackle. Eason Jr. has always been prepared ever since he stepped foot on campus his freshman year. The soon to be third-year player spent time on varsity intermittently his first season, however; found himself playing more on junior varsity. During his second season Eason Jr. gravitated to the varsity side of the ball and never looked back grabbing major minutes in each game. He had a solid season last year logging one interception, two pass breakups, and four sacks. By his standard, Eason Jr. had a solid season but also acknowledges the awareness to improve.
“I’m really looking forward to being closer to my team. It’s not just about me getting better individually it’s all about us getting better as an overall unit. It really all comes down to teamwork. If everyone isn’t connected as one unit whatever goals we have for the season is not going to work. We have to stay together, play as one, and we’ll continue to be the dominant defense we were last season”, said Eason Jr.
Dominant may be an understatement. The Pilot defense only allowed 14 points per game, held five teams under seven points or less, and pitched back-to-back shutouts against Washington and Norcom. This type of consistency has Purdue, University of North Carolina, Coastal Carolina, and North Carolina State University showing interest. With this type of interest being generated, the Pilot product is gearing up for a summer full of visits.
“In July, I plan on going to a few college camps. NC State, UNC, and Tennessee are the college camps I plan on attending”, concluded Eason, Jr.
With a high motor and tremendous upside, it’s only a matter of time before Eason, Jr. becomes a household name. Look for more to come from Derrick Eason Jr. and the Norview Pilots as the off season continues to progress.
