You’ve heard plenty about the NFL Draft including news on guys with local connections who were drafted like William and Mary safety DeAndre Houston-Carson who was selected in the sixth round by the Chicago Bears. There were no guys with high school connections to the 757 that were drafted this year, but a couple of locals were scooped up in free agency.
University of Virginia DT David Dean (Green Run) – Cincinnati Bengals
Dean (DT 6-1 290) was a starter for all 12 games for UVA and finished his career #4 all-time among UVA defensive tackles with 25. 5 tackles for a loss. Dean was one of the most consistent players for UVA, appearing in 11 of 12 games as a freshman, all 12 games as a sophomore, and he started all 24 games of his final two years at Virginia. David was an All-ACC Honorable Mention in 2015.
University of Virginia OL Ross Burbank (Cox) – Oakland Raiders
Ross Burbank (OG 6-4 310) was a similar model of consistency for UVA. He redshirted in the 2011 season, but appeared in all 12 games in 2012, 9 of 12 in 2013, started in 11 of 12 games in 2014 and started all 12 games in his final season. He was an All-ACC honorable mention in 2015 and was a key presence on the offensive line for Virginia’s prolific tailback Taquan Mizzell, who broke the ACC record for receiving yards by a running back last fall with 721 yards.
There are several local candidates who could come out for the NFL Draft in 2017, including two that would have to leave college with a year of eligibility left. Quin Blanding at UVA and Bucky Hodges of Virginia Tech would both be very attractive to NFL teams if they declare for the draft at the end of the coming season.
