Since the start of the new year the Bruins have been extremely active. T.C. Chisley helped get the off-season rolling by watching his recruiting pickup right before committing to Hampton University. Jeremiah Owusu has watched his recruiting status elevate tremendously after Chisley’s commitment and is currently at seven offers. Mondo Walker (JR SS 5-11 170) has also been impressing as of late. The rising junior is coming off of a promising season where he assumed a more productive role. Walker came into last season as the Bruins top rated strong safety on their depth chart and looks to improve while heading up New Jersey for the Nike Opening.
“This weekend will be the first camp for me. I intend to go to a lot more once the summer starts. I feel like I am well prepared. I also feel like I’ve got all the resources around me to help with anything I need and I’m taking advantage of those”, stated Walker.
Mondo is proving to have the same type of work ethic as his brother Ricky who also was an impact player at Bethel High School. The rising junior was a force on the back half of the defense for Coach William Beverley. He accumulated 45 tackles, 13 pass breakups, four forced fumbles, one interception, and one touchdown. Mondo solidified a Bruin defense that only allowed 13 points per game. In order to improve on that mark and play past week one of the playoffs next season Mondo is currently working on his game right now.
“I’ve been staying back with Coach Marrow (Bethel) who trained with Jerod Mayo back when he was at Kecoughtan. We’ve been working on my 40 time, my stance, and things along those lines. Also, I’ve been playing for the Virginia Thoroughbreds 7-on-7 team. I’ve learned new defensive back techniques from Coach Steve (Bishop Sullivan). Being with the best players in the area improved my game by just being around them”, said Mondo.
Slowly but surely the recruiting process is shaping up for the Bethel product. He’s yet to see his first offer and that’s part of the reason he’s on the road this weekend. However, he is starting to generate interest from Norfolk State University, University of Virginia, and Methodist. Since the start of the spring Mondo has gotten mail from West Virginia and Florida State. Mondo was just informed within the last week that Northwestern called requesting his academic transcripts. With the offseason starting to progress Mondo appears to have a lot on his plate.
“So far I’ve taken five unofficial visits. Norfolk State University, University of North Carolina, Virginia Tech, and the University of Virginia twice is where I’ve been to. Currently I’m heading to the Nike Opening Regional in New Jersey”, concluded Mondo.
Last season Mondo was slowed down by a shoulder injury during their 24- season. This forced him to share time with Jaevynn Holmes-Reid (SR/SS 6-0 180) until the end of the season and into their playoff game with Indian River. Prior to the Menchville game Mondo started the first eight games of the season to including said Menchville game. Heading into the summer Mondo is completely injury free and plans to join the Virginia Thoroughbreds for the Pylon 7-on-7 Tournament.
Look for more to come from Mondo Walker and the Bethel Bruins as the offseason continues to progress.
