You don’t often hear of the Troy Trojans recruiting in the 757, but you better believe it. Grad assistant Justin Keown reached out to Heritage assistant coach David Porter on Thursday night and gave him the news.
“Coach Keown said that they saw his film and was excited about his ability and what he could do as far as making plays and stretching the field,” said Porter.
That offer puts Watson (JR WR 6-2 175) at six, with more working. He now holds Hampton, Howard, Delaware State, Towson, Vanderbilt and Troy. Coach Porter reported that a few other schools are showing significant interest in Amonyae.
“Our college day was a big success. We had about 20 coaches at the showcase, including HU, NSU, Virginia Tech, Buffalo, Temple, Wake, UVA-Wise, Shenandoah, ECU and NC State to name a few,” Porter explained. “Temple was impressed by Watson. Virginia Tech’s wide receiver coach (Holman Wiggins) came to see him in person. Wake sent Coach (Kevin) Higgins, the wide receivers coach, and he videoed Amonyae. Duke sent a coach the week before to watch him workout. Tennessee came by Monday and Michigan Thursday.”
Recruiting is definitely picking up for Watson. His quarterback, Jeremiah Boyd (JR QB/LB 6-0 205), is picking up interest as a linebacker. William and Mary, Liberty, Coastal Carolina, and Howard have all expressed interest in Jeremiah according to Coach Porter. Friday morning Kentucky Christian extended a scholarship offer to Boyd.
Heritage High School is seeing increased interest from the college coaches, even drawing colleges that don’t routinely recruit the region. It’s all effectively raising the bar for college prospects in the 757.
