Tallwood defensive end Cameron Washington made his second trip to Virginia Tech last weekend during the Hokies’ annual spring football game. Washington, is hoping to land an offer from the Hokies and new head coach Justin Fuente heading into his senior season.
“I liked the new vibe that the {Virginia Tech} coaching staff brought to the game. It made everything very interesting,” Washington said of the unofficial visit. He previously visited the Virginia Tech campus for a one-day camp last summer.
Washington reported that Hokies assistant coach Zohn Burden, a Virginia Beach native, stopped by Tallwood on Monday, but with AP exams taking place for 3.1 GPA toting lineman, a simple hello was the only interaction between the two.
“{Coach Burden} dropped some things off and told my coach to tell me to keep up the hard work,” Washington noted.
In a beach district stacked with teams such as Ocean Lakes, Cox, and Salem, the 6’4”, 230-pound junior end had 31 tackles, three sacks, nine TFL’s and two forced fumbles. Along with rising junior Lamar Gilbert, Washington is one of the young stars of the Lions’ program. Tallwood finished 4-6 in 2015, starting the season 2-1 before losing five consecutive ballgames including a 77-0 defeat at the hands of Ocean Lakes.
Although the school has not been a hotbed for high-major talent in recent years, Washington is already receiving interest from the likes of Appalachian State, Charlotte, James Madison, Virginia Tech and William and Mary. Washington picked up an earlier offer from the Old Dominion Monarchs. He mentions Navy as the school that is showing the most interest as of late.
“This year, I think I did well, but I know I still have a lot to work on for this upcoming season,” Washington added.
