Former Maury star and current Oak Hill Academy PG, Matt Coleman, could be headed to Chile with the USA Men’s U18 National Team if he makes it through the final cuts July 11-15 in Houston, TX.
“I was invited to the USA mini camp at the beginning of my sophomore year and now I have the chance to go back and actually make the team,” Coleman said of taking part in the tryout process.
The top 2017 basketball recruit would take his talents overseas for the first time and he is also the sole athlete from Virginia on the team.
“I’m very excited, been dreaming about this since I was a young one. It’s an honor and a blessing knowing where I come from because nobody has been granted this opportunity,” Coleman noted.
The 12 finalists will be announced succeeding the training camp session in Texas. The team will then depart on July 15 for the FIBA Americas U18 Championship for Men which will take place July 19-23 in Valdivia, Chile. Although his EYBL career is coming to an end, Coleman’s dreams are just coming to life as he heads into his final season at Oak Hill.
“Playing with this team somewhat compares to my team at Oak Hill. We have high-level guys but this USA team from top to bottom is without a doubt going to make a difference in my game on the next level. It’s been fun and my game has become more diverse because of the types of athletes I have been able to play with,” the rising senior added.
