It’s been an eventful summer for Monocan junior forward Megan Walker. Most recently, Walker was a part of an USA team that competed in the 3 on 3 18-and-under tournament. Walker was selected as the tournament’s Most Valuable Player, earning a spot in the FIBA Womens 3 on 3 18U championship in Kazakhstan, where her team ultimately fell in the championship game against France, 21-12. The junior was named to the three-team all-tournament team, finishing with the second-highest scoring tally throughout the event with 44 points.
The two-time reigning Group 4A state player of the year and Gatorade state player of the year, burst onto the recruiting circles as an eighth grader, and led the Chiefs to its second consecutive state title this past season. Monacan will have a chance to join the Princess Anne girls and IC Norcom boys in the elusive three-peat club with another state championship next season.
Walker, who averaged 21.2 points, 8.4 rebounds and 3.2 steals as a junior, also recently trimmed her list to four schools: Notre Dame, Texas, Virginia and UConn. Her goal is to make a decision following her final official visit in September. Of course, it’s easy to assume the four-time defending NCAA champion Hukies staking a lead for Walker’s services.
Walker has already visited Connecticut previoiusly, getting the opportunity to hang with NCAA Player of the Year and number 1 overall pick in the WNBA draft, Breanna Stewart. Notre Dame head coach Muffett McGraw has also been a frequent visitor to the Richmond-area to scout the 6-foot-, who is widely seen as the top-ranked prospect in the 2017 class.
In the meantime, Walker also tried out for the U18 team competing in the FIBA Americas Championships taking place July 13-17 in Chile. She will headline a team that also includes the number 1 senior in the country, Baylor signee Lauren Cox.
