Woodside has had much to celebrate throughout the offseason. Like many teams within the Peninsula District, the Wolverines have chosen to keep most of their moves locked up in-house. After all, that’s what families do. First, Kamari Jackson (SR/FS 5-11 180) grabbed a few offers. Next, Tyhier Tyler made a verbal commitment to Army and finally Dominique Sumter has picked up his first offer. Sumter has been in contact with the University of St. Francis and over the weekend they finally decided it was time to pull the trigger. If there’s one thing that remains constant about receiving offers, there’s nothing like getting contacted when you receive your first one.
“I’ve been talking to St. Francis for a little over a month. Coach (Roy) Cutshaw followed me on Twitter so I messaged him to thank him for following me. We’ve been talking back and forth ever since then. St. Francis held a camp last weekend and I missed so he called me to talk about what happened at the camp. That same day he told me to call him later and I did. We talked for a little while and then he pretty much told me he wanted to offer me,” stated Sumter.
Sumter (SR/MLB 6-1 210) is being recruited by St. Francis as a linebacker which plays right up his alley. Although Sumter plays a little tight end, Woodside has an offense that’s designed around the run and not the pass. It’s hard to tell if Sumter will get enough looks at tight end to know if he’ll end up being recruited as a tight end. Nevertheless, none of that matters in the grand scheme of things. Sumter is holding his first offer and it’s clearly a huge weight that’s been lifted off of his shoulders.
“I’m really excited about this first offer and it feels really good to finally have it. This offer lets me know that I’ve been working for something and that something is starting to pay off. This is not just something I’m doing for myself; I’m doing this for my family also. I’m starting to get the recognition that I’ve been working for over the last few years. It feels really good to see that this is all going towards something special,” said Sumter.
Coach Cutshaw has taken the time to watch a lot of film on Sumter. His tackling ability and lateral speed from the linebacker position is what drew St. Francis to Sumter. The rising senior believes he can contribute at a high level to any program he decides to commit to. Sumter is committed to outworking anyone that stands in the way of his progression. Progression has led to more interest; however, St. Francis is the only program showing hard interest. Sumter is also fresh off of a visit to Marshall so time will tell if they’re the next program to send an offer his way.
The Woodside product and the Wolverines are preparing for a week one trip to Canton, Ohio to take on GlenOak High School on August 26. The game could be a serious momentum builder for Woodside and marks the second consecutive season the Wolverines open up out-of-state.
