Southampton High School may be on the fringes of the 757, but the school has certainly gotten on the radar with the talent they’re developing.
Coach Willie Gillus has several college prospects on his roster and the most notable is rising senior defensive end Tyran Hunt. The 6-5 280 pound lineman is now up to 16 scholarship offers and we caught up with him at Thursday’s Penn State Satellite Camp at Old Dominion.
“During the (Spring) Evalution period, I picked up an offer from Syracuse, Rutgers, UCF and Maryland,” Hunt commented. “Coach London (at Maryland) visited my school and had great things to say. He likes how I look on film. He talked to me about some of the recruits they have coming in and said that I could play a key role on their line.”
It was appropriate that Hunt was at the Penn State camp because Syracuse and Virginia were also at the camp, coaching up the kids and sizing up college prospects.
“Coach Hart (of Syracuse) came by the school. I got to meet a majority of the staff today here at camp,” Tyran said. “Rutgers visited me at school and so did UCF.”
Hunt mentioned that his camp plans for the summer included UVA, UNC, Maryland and Virginia Tech.
“After I visit these schools, at the end of July, I plan to narrow it down to at least five. I hope to make my decision in late August or September; sometime in that area,” stated Hunt.
He expressed no preference for staying close to home or heading to school far away.
“My parents want what’s best for me. Distance is definitely not a restriction,” he said.
Tennessee, Temple, and Penn State have also expressed interest but haven’t pulled the trigger on an offer yet, according to Tyran.
In addition to North Carolina, Virginia, Virginia Tech, Syracuse, Rutgers, UCF and Maryland, Tyran also holds scholarship offers from Cincinnati, Duke, Liberty, Marshall, North Carolina, Old Dominion, Pitt, Vanderbilt and Wake Forest.
