Nike’s national celebration of high school football, The Opening, already has plenty of buzz and television appeal. The event airs for three days, starting tonight on ESPN.
Khalan Laborn will add to the excitement with the announcement of his verbal commitment on Saturday.
Laborn’s list is narrowed to North Carolina, Virginia Tech and Florida State. He’ll quickly close out his recruitment with a choice among three ACC schools.
Considering that his offer list is almost 20 schools long, it’s intriguing that he’s narrowed his list to these three. Florida State has been after him for a long time, and the Seminoles have been thought to be the favorite for a long time.
Virginia Tech, the in-state school, has a good shot to land him since the Hokies and recruiting coach Zohn Burden have a great relationship with Laborn and his family. Virginia Tech also has Laborn as their #1 running back recruit. New head coach Justin Fuente has shown that he will run an explosive offense and that’s appealing to Khalan, especially with his abilities to catch and run.
North Carolina is now option #3, and it makes a lot of sense considering that recruiting coach Larry Porter has also maintained a long term relationship with Laborn. Khalan’s family has roots in Shelby, North Carolina outside the Charlotte area. Chapel Hill is equidistant from Charlotte and the 757.
When you look at Laborn’s position in his recruitment, the crystal ball becomes clearer. Florida State is a top option for the nation’s #1 running back recruit, DeāAndre Swift out of St. Joseph’s in Philadelphia. Virginia Tech is all in on Laborn, while UNC already has verbal commitments from Michael Carter (Navarre, FL) and Adarius Lemons (Clearwater, FL).
Football players won’t typically shy away just because there’s a little competition, but it looks like the stable at UNC is full. Florida State was a virtual lock a year ago, but that’s changed and it may be time for Virginia Tech to lock in a huge piece of their 2017 recruiting class. Because of the friendship between Khalan Laborn and Tahj Capehart, you might see them both commit to the same school. Capehart holds 21 offers but doesn’t hold a Florida State offer.
Are the stars aligning for the Hokies?
