Camp season continues with Connell Maynor Camp at Hampton University.
The Hampton Pirates host the first of two summertime one-day prospect camps this Saturday, with well over 100 athletes expected to compete. That gives you your chance to shine.
The Pirates went 6-5 last year in Connell Maynor’s second year as head coach. HU finished strong with wins over Florida A&M and Savannah State by a combined score of 75-3. That puts them on the right foot heading into this season as they open with Old Dominion on September 3 in Norfolk on the campus of Old Dominion University.
Local recruits dot the Pirates’ roster, including starting quarterback Jaylian “JJ” Williamson of Oscar Smith. Other local athletes expected to play a big role in the Pirates 2016 campaign include defensive lineman Owen Obasuyi (Landstown), offensive lineman Johnny Cruz (York) and wide receivers Rashawn Proctor (Bethel) and SeQuan Gooding (Oscar Smith).
Then there’s the Pirates recruiting class from this off season, including Phoebus wide receiver Elijah Nelson, Landstown QB Bryson Stukes, Landstown safety Noah Boone and Bethel cornerback T.C. Chisley.
Coach Connell Maynor and the Pirates’ coaching staff are determined to protect their home turf and it starts with local recruits. Friday is the day to earn a scholarship to Hampton University and compete against some of the best talent that Virginia can bring to the table.
Check-in for Friday’s camp starts at 9 a.m. Camp starts at 10 on the artificial turf of Armstrong Stadium. Lunch and a t-shirt for the camp is included and the camp will wrap at about 1:30 p.m. It’s a great chance to see the football facilities at Hampton University, meet the football coaches, and communicate your desire to become a Division I college football player.
We’ll see you on Friday at Hampton University. Their second camp of the season is on Friday, July 15 and their annual Big Man Camp and 7-on-7 High School Tournament is set for Saturday, July 16. More information and pre-registration is available online.
