Prior to traveling to Kenner, LA for this year’s AAU National Tournament, fifth grader Micayah Holland, participated in the Hampton Roads Futures Classic, which gave her a taste of competing against older and steeper competition before heading off to Nationals. With an eight-girl squad from the Hampton Roads area, the Norfolk Xpress team, coached by Norview girls head coach Jonathan Wilson, finished among the top teams at this week’s AAU National Tournament, defeating Texas Dynasty in its final contest to secure a seventh place finish.
The tournament which began on June 24, wrapped up yesterday with the finals. Program Director, Adrena Foy, didn’t make the trip to Louisiana but was excited to learn of the fifth grade team’s seventh place finish.
“It says a lot about our program and our coaches, who teaches and train our players that it takes a ‘team’ to be in the top ten and Xpress hard work, no excuses approach will soon pay off,” Foy noted.
Foy has been founder and director of The Norfolk Xpress AAU Girls Basketball League since 2002. During that span, over 800 female student-athletes have competed on Norfolk Xpress teams, accounting for 200 student-athletes who have gone on to college and over 100 student-athletes receiving scholarships to compete on the collegiate level. Foy has coached the likes of Feyonda Fitzgerald (Temple), Adrienne Motley (Miami), Chanette Hicks (Virginia Tech) and Crystal Leary (West Virginia). Current high school standouts Junajah Somerville (Lake Taylor), Chyna Nixon (Neuman Goretti), Asia Deal (Maury) and Chelsea Worthy (Norfolk Academy) have also come through the Xpress program. Nixon, ranked 33rd in the latest ESPN 2017 Hoop Gurlz Rankings, Deal, and Somerville have since moved on to the Nike elite circuit.
The Norfolk Xpress fifth grade “A” team finished runner-up in the AAU 6th Grade Division II championships last year. The fifth grade AAU Super Showcase is scheduled for next month in Orlando, FL, while the Xpress sixth and eighth grade teams will also participate in national tournaments in the coming weeks .
