Team: Robinson (Fairfax, VA)
Classification/Conference – 6A/5
– 9-4 (lost to South County 20-15 in 6A state quarterfinals)
Head Coach – Scott Vossler
Mascot – Rams (Royal Blue and Gold)
For Robinson coach Scott Vossler, there is power in numbers, at least as he assesses the Rams’ 2016 squad.
“In past years, we’ve had 25-30 kids we felt could play in a varsity football game. This year we feel like we might have 35-40 kids. We (should) have a deeper football team across the board.”
Vossler, in his third year at the helm, is already at an advantage. His quarterback, Alex Miller, has been the starter for the past two seasons and will be under center as the . Vossler calls him “our best vocal leader,” and Miller will be leading an offense that is missing its top two running backs from last year, but returns six starters.
One of the returnees is halfback Roman Lowery. Lowery (6-1, 210), a senior, scampered for just under 950 yards as a junior, and his effort was worthy of second-team All-Conference 5 recognition.
He will be joined in the backfield by Jacquez Stewart and Reid Scarborough. Both were defensive starters last year. Stewart (6-0, 195, Jr.) is an FBS-level talent at safety, but will add halfback to his list of duties, while Scarborough (5-9, 175, Jr.) will play cornerback on defense, and multi-task at fullback for the offense.
Nick Bernacchi (6-3, 280, OT, Sr.) is the catalyst of the Ram offensive line. Bernacchi earned first team All-State honors as a junior, and he has already committed to play for Navy as a collegiate. He will be joined on the line by returning starters Dev Craig (5-11, 210, Sr., G) and Daniel Smith (6-2, 200, Jr. TE).
Robinson also returns roughly half of last season’s defensive starters from a unit that allowed a shade less than 16 points per game in 2015.
Inside linebackers Donnie Warter and Tyler Iriando will form the core of the defense. Warter (6-0, 185, Sr.) is the most accomplished player, having earned second team All-State honors last season, while Iriando (5-11, 210, Sr.) was a second team All-Conference selection.
Other returning starters on the defense include Grant Miller (6-1, 245, Sr. DL), and Nick Rodriquez (5-10, 165, Sr., DB). Devin Townsend (6-1, 175, Sr., DB) earned some starts in spot relief last year, and should help to reinforce the secondary.
Vossler believes that his offense may not have as much raw power, but will have more explosive playmaking ability. Of the defense, he noted that his team lost two key pass rushers, but added, “We think that we are more athletic than in years past.”
Vossler’s goal is for the Rams to compete for a conference championship and advance in the 6A playoffs. Robinson was 6-1 versus Conference year (including playoffs), with the only loss being a 3-0 heartbreaker to Westfield.
Others to Watch – Matt Oakley (6-2, 200, Sr., TE), Ryan Headley (6-3, 250, Jr., OT), Josh Sellers (6-0, 195, Sr., TE), Andrei Turets (6-0, 220, Jr., C), Aaron Serrano (6-2, 215, Sr., G), Geoffrey Lustre (6-1, 215, Jr., G), Youngmin Kim (6-1, 215, Sr., C/G), Juante Walker (6-2, 265, Sr., DL), Austin Ward (6-0, 170, Jr., DB), Eddie Sheku (6-0, 200, Jr., DL), Ethan Rothstein (6-3, 190, So., OLB), Wilson Friestad (5-10, 175, Jr., OLB), Simon Ackerman (6-3, 190, Jr., OLB).
