Game against Maryland private school powerhouse completes Oscar Smith’s schedule

Oscar Smith has found their tenth game. Just weeks ago, Oscar Smith Athletic Director Todd Parker lamented that the Tigers couldn’t find an out-of-district game to complete their schedule. The departure of Head Coach Richard Morgan and the hiring process to bring on new head coach Bill Dee took a lot of time this off season. Despite the tumultuous period, the Tigers are back on track with a big name coach and an opener that will provide a significant challenge.
The Tigers will host the DeMatha August 26 at 7:00. That’s the first Friday night of the high school football season.
DeMatha, ranked #12 in the nation by USA Today to finish the 2015 season, will visit the four years. In 2013, they played Phoebus at the Virginia Beach Sportsplex in a season opener that the Phantoms narrowly lost by a score of 24-20. Phoebus went on to a 10- that year, losing a second round shocker to King’s Fork, 17-14 to finish the season.
Last year, Oscar Smith only played nine games and managed to finish the season with the #1 ranking for the 6A South Playoffs. That was hotly contested when Ocean Lakes 10-0 and dominated their schedule only to finish as the #2 seed. Oscar Smith shocked the Dolphins 29-19 in the 6A South Semifinal, and lost their only game when they fell in the 6A State Championship in triple overtime to Westfield.
The Tigers last home opener against a national ranked opponent came in 2014 when Booker T. Washington of Miami, FL came calling. The Tornadoes crushed the Tigers on ESPN that night, 57-21. Oscar Smith went on to win 12 straight after the loss, falling to Ocean Lakes at the Virginia Beach Sportsplex in the 6A State Semifinal. Ocean Lakes went on to win the 6A state title that year.
There is a possibility that the DeMatha/Oscar Smith game could find its way onto ESPN, but booking the game this late may make it impossible to shift television schedules around in order to accommodate it.
