Hampton rising senior Dazz Newsome is a special talent in a long line of Crabber greats. Newsome scored an astonishing seven touchdowns in a game against Gloucester last season, on the way to earning all-state selections at wide receiver and punt returner.
“{I} just wanted to come out here and get some work. It’s always good to test yourself against good competition,” Newsome said of his appearance at last weekend’s Hampton Roads Youth Football camp.
The 5-foot-11 Newsome, who currently holds a 2.7 grade point average, enters his senior season as one of the area’s top prospects with an offer sheet that currently sits at eight schools, including local programs Hampton, Norfolk State, and Old Dominion. Charlotte, Delaware State, Iowa State and Marshall are also some of the programs to enter the race for Newsome. He mentions Louisville, Purdue and Tennessee as other schools that shown interest as of late. Of course, family ties keep Virginia Tech in the picture, with a brother, Deon, currently a wide receiver for the Hokies and father, Myron, also a Tech alum. Newsome expects to narrow his list of schools prior to the upcoming season, but mentions one local school that has stayed within striking distance in hopes of securing a commitment.
“ODU has been recruiting me the hardest lately, and then probably Delaware State. Both schools are recruiting me at DB. Marshall is the only school that is recruiting me as a Receiver. Most schools just see me as an athlete,” Newsome said.
Like any high school football athlete, the offseason is a crucial time as Newsome enters his final season at Hampton. The Crabbers fell just short of a region title last year after storming through the Peninsula District during the regular season. Last year’s starter at quarterback, Jovonn “Bubba” Quillen, is now at Virginia Tech but Newsome expects a high-powered offense that averaged just over season, to be just fine with the Crabbers’ assortment of weapons leftover. Twice last season Hampton eclipsed 50 points, including a season-high 56 in a shutout win over Menchville. In only two contests did the Crabbers fail to surpass 20 points. Quillen, who accounted for over 2,300 yards of total offense and 39 touchdowns as a senior, leaves behind a sizeable void at the quarterback position.
“Losing {Bubba} is pretty big, but we still have a lot of talent coming back with me, Trequan Smith, Jalen Powell. We have two transfers coming in so I should be able to stay at receiver and a little bit of running back next year. But we expect to win a state championship. That’s our goal for next year,” Newsome said.
