After an All-American college football career at Virginia Tech in the 1990’s and after five years as an assistant on Frank Beamer’s staff, Cornell Brown has joined the Norfolk State Spartans’ football staff under head coach Latrell Scott. Brown comes on board to take the role of co-defensive coordinator and linebackers coach.
“Adding someone the caliber of Coach Brown to our staff is very beneficial to our program. He has strong ties around the state and was a key member of some tremendous defenses both as a player and coach at Virginia Tech,” Scott said. “He has won championships at every level and will be a great fit for our defensive staff. He and Coach Faison are looking forward to combining their knowledge to strengthen our defense.”
Andrew Faison joined the Spartans’ staff in February as the Defensive Coordinator after two seasons at Delaware State.
Brown played for Virginia Tech from 1993 to 1996 and led his team to a bowl game in every season. He had his Hokies jersey retired in 2002 and was inducted into the Virginia Tech Sports Hall of Fame in 2007. He was later inducted into the Virginia Sports Hall of Fame in April of 2013.
Under defensive coordinator Bud Foster, Brown coached defensive units that led the nation in total defense and scoring defense in and fourth, respectively, in those categories in 2007.
Brown was a sixth-round draft pick of the Baltimore Ravens in 1997. He played seven seasons in the NFL and was a member of the Ravens Super Bowl XXXV championship team.
