Bayside wide receiver Armani Chatman begin this past weekend as a
self-admitted “fan” of Alabama growing up. But with no offer from the
Crimson Tide – just yet- Virginia Tech has long been seen as the leader for
Chatman’s services as the first school to offer the rising junior. Over the
weekend, a trio of other perennial Top 25 programs took turns hosting the
electric class of .
Chatman, a honorable mention All-Coastal Conference selection last season,
visited the University of Clemson first on his three-day road trip which
began on Friday. Immediately, Chatman was impressed by the school.
“It was a great visit. [The} program is really on the uprise, staff was
great. They really made me feel like I was at home. I love the college,
overall,” Chatman said following the trip to Death Valley. The Tigers are
recruiting Chatman as an athlete due to versatility to play either side of
the ball.
Following the Clemson trip, Chatman made his way to Tallahassee, FL to
check out the Florida State campus. After touring the Florida State
facilities, Chatman had an opportunity to spend time with the Seminoles’
coaching staff. The FSU coaches are recruiting the Virginia Beach native
at wide receiver, unlike Clemson, who is looking at Chatman as an athlete.
He left the visit impressed by the family-atmosphere of the campus.
“The campus was amazing. Even though the whole staff wasn’t there, the
coaches treated us like family. The school is just attractive and grabs
your attention because of the players they produce,” Chatman noted.
Chatman is hopeful for an offer soon courtesy of the 2013 national champs.
Last, on the agenda was a trip to the University of Georgia. The trip to
Athens made have been the most enjoyable to Chatman.
“The Georgia trip was way better than I expected. {The} whole staff was
there. I’m a huge Alabama fan because of the success and the way the
program is ran, and just to know that half of the coaching staff at Georgia
is originally the Alabama staff was amazing. We all had an instant
connection. Coach Coley is an amazing coach and really taught me a lot
while I was there,” the rising junior added.
Chatman, who finished with 442 receiving yards and nine touchdowns as a
sophomore, has already received interest from Duke, Penn State, Tennessee,
Virginia, Virginia Tech and West Virginia. Rutgers offered following the
one from the Hokies. He has also previously visited Happy Valley and West
Virginia and Tennessee earlier this spring as well. A return to trip to
Georgia for the Bulldogs’ matchup with Tennessee is also in the cards for
Chatman.
But on Monday it was right back to work for Chatman, as he headed back to
Bayside to begin preseason workouts. The Marlins open the season on August
26th with a home matchup against Green Run. Chatman will carry a heavier
workload in 2016 with former Teradja Mitchell now at Bishop Sullivan and
last year’s two-standout Phillip Patterson now a freshman at Virginia Tech.
