Flashing back to Hampton High School’s 2014-2015 basketball team, three names come to mind, Jalen Ray, Marquis Godwin and Mastadi Pitt.
Godwin and Pitt decided to transfer leaving Ray as the sole member of the trio remaining for their junior season.
Shortly after the start of the season, Godwin returned home to Hampton and joined Ray as the Crabbers went on to win the PenSouth Tournament Title.
“I feel like they [Hampton] played well last season. My freshmen and sophomore year they kind of depending on me, Quis and Jalen but they really stepped up and believed in each other,” Pitt said of his decision to return to Hampton.
Although Hampton’s state run was cut short at Old Dominion, the Crabbers’ chances to reach the state championship in the upcoming season is still in the air, as the treacherous trio from two years ago has reassembled.
“I came back because I want to finish my senior year where I started at because Hampton was a family to me and I have a great relationship with my coach so I decided to come back. I want to win a ring my senior year with Marquis Godwin and Jalen Ray,” Pitt noted.
The class of elected to accompany fellow teammates, Godwin and Ray in their final high school season at Hampton.
“We’ve been playing together a long time since we were nine and under. Sophomore year I think we were young but now I feel like we are really experienced and we can really get it this year,” Pitt added.
In Pitt’s last season with the Crabbers he acquired PenSouth Conference Player of the Year and led the team with 15.7 points per game. The 6-foot- concluded his junior season at Atlantic Shores scoring over 20 points in 13 games and averaging 19 points, five rebounds and three assists per game.
“My junior season last year was a learning experience because I learned how to be more of a leader and take over in games and fight through adversary. While playing for Atlantic Shores it was really competitive and I played against a lot of teams with highly recruited athletes,” he added.
Pitt made his unofficial debut with Hampton at the Heritage Summer League and nailed a pair of three pointers and a slender of layups.
“It felt great being in a Crabber uniform again. I am glad to be playing with my old teammates again, it brought back memories,” Pitt said.
Before adding,“While at Atlantic Shores I did improve my jump shot but my final season I still want to become more vocal, pick it up on defense and run the show,” said Pitt.
St. Joseph, Norfolk State, Howard, Longwood, Creighton, Cincinnati and JMU are a few of the schools that have interest in Pitt going into his high school finale.
