Over the weekend, former IC Norcom standout Dorian Finney-Smith hosted the inaugural Finney Family Cookout at his former high school. The event was the first for the Portsmouth native since signing a free agent contract with the NBA’s Dallas Mavericks during the summer.
“The event is for the community, you know, so everyone could just come together and celebrate each other,” Finney-Smith noted. The weekend long celebration featured a youth basketball game followed by an alumni game featuring Finney Smith, along with older brother Ben Finney and Vernon Macklin, who also starred at Norcom and Florida like Finney-Smith.
“Everyone knows what me and Vernon did for the city {of Portsmouth}, so its just exciting to see everybody come out and show love,” Finney-Smith added. “Portsmouth has always been a family. When we won the state championship we had a parade and IC Norcom is like family. Me and Vernon are like family. It was just easy.”
