Several schools filled head coaching position positions during the offseason. None of the coaching searches played out as strangely as the case at Chuchland, with the school appearing to hire a new boys varsity coach on two separate occasions. This week, Mike Holland, who was the second person hired by the program, was officially named head coach ending the lengthy search.
“I have no idea what happened with that situation. That was actually news to me,” Holland said at the time of his hiring earlier this summer.
A 1995 Churchland graduate, Holland was a member of the last Trucker team to qualify for a state tournament. He later played at Christopher Newport before coaching stints at Woodrow Wilson and most recently the Churchland Middle School head coach, where he coached the team to a pair of city championships. After meeting with Churchland athletic director David Moss Thursday morning, Holland was informed of the school’s decision to bring him on as head coach.
“I’m just excited to return home and lead the Churchland program. This like family to me. I’ve been around the Churchland community my whole life, so it just feels good to have this opportunity.
Holland, has kept busy this summer coaching in the inaugural Hampton Roads Futures Classic, in addition to his work with the Boo WIlliams AAU organization. Holland will take over a Churchland program that finished 5-16 in 2015, and will be rolling out its fourth head coach in three seasons.
